iOS 7 Design Rumored to Have Completely New Look

When Apple dismissed iOS head Scott Forstall last year, the software’s look and feel became the domain of the company’s designer-in-chief, Jonathan Ive. Many predicted that Ive, whose simple hardware designs have become iconic in the industry, would introduce a flatter, less showy aesthetic to iOS.

A new rumor suggests he’s doing just that. Ive is said to be eschewing Apple’s “skeuomorphic” design — where digital representations of objects are designed to resemble real-world counterparts — in favor of simpler shapes and non-textured surfaces, 9to5 Mac reports.

Details on how the design of iOS will get flatter are scant, but one source says the interface will lose “all signs” of gloss and skeuomorphism. For example, the Notes app, which currently resembles a yellow legal pad, may become something closer to Evernote or any number of iOS to-do list apps. Read more…

Did Da Vinci Invent Google Glass?

Leonardo Da Vinci, the 15th-century Renaissance man, is credited with envisioning or outright inventing hundreds of modern-day devices; facsimiles of everything from a machine gun to parachutes and even today’s helicopter can be found in his detailed drawings

The schematics and notes he left behind are a treasure trove for researchers, including Dr. Burt Wilde. The University of Illinois researcher says he’s discovered evidence that the first design for something very much like Google Glass was created by the master himself.

Ford C-Max Energi Feels Like the Car of the Future

One of Ford’s most technologically advanced products for 2013 is the C-Max Energi, a plug-in hybrid that Ford says gets 43 miles per gallon. I tested one for a couple of weeks, giving me plenty of time to see what it’s like to live with the latest electric-car tech.

When I saw this unusual vehicle decked out in a Prius-like color Ford calls “Ice Storm Metallic,” it looked to me like a typical four-door hatchback. But hopping into the vehicle, which is about 4 inches higher than most small hatchbacks, it felt like I was sitting in a mini SUV. If you like that feeling of sitting high in the saddle, this car will give you a hint of that. Read more…

101 Typefaces Inspired by David Bowie

As part of the Victoria and Albert Museum’s “David Bowie Is” exhibit, Mark Blamire (aka “Blam”) created a typographic print that simply reads the famous last name over and over

Blam asked 101 designers to create their own typeface or pick their favorite for the Changing Faces of Bowie, creating a unique piece inspired by the singer’s career

Designer Harry Heptonstall’s maze-like submission was inspired by Bowie’s role in the 1986 film Labyrinth, David Jones’ “Bowie” is a modern interpretation of a graphic he painted on his school satchel, while Gareth Wild swapped the letters around in his contribution, inspired by the time Bowie asked his band to swap instruments.

Although the iPhone 5 only launched five months ago, designers are already imagining how Apple’s next line of smartphones will look

Peter Zigich, a Toronto-based 3D designer, posted concept images of the iPhone 6, the iPhone mini and a phablet on his website.

For Apple’s next flagship phone, Zigich proposes moving the home button to the side, leaving room for more screen room and another row of icons. The change, he adds, would maintain the same physical dimensions as the iPhone 5. Zigich also mulls over the possibility of two home buttons — one on each side of the phone.
